Who are the people behind the scenes that put together Kirtland's art shows?
There is a working process behind Kirtland putting together wonderful art shows in the Gallery. The Art Gallery is located in the Kirtland House. Joe Donna , Scoot Rice, and Jackie Little are the key players of this process.
"When in Rome do as the Romans do. We do the art shows to benefit the community and the school." said Joe Donna, head of the Art Gallery.
Donna has his Masters degree in Photography from Central Michigan University.
"We want to show Art pieces that are different yet not repulsive. The mission of the Gallery is to bring new and interesting pieces of Art. The Art Gallery is a teaching tool for our students." said Donna.
There is a process that takes place between many to put on the art shows. The first step is to select an artist. This happens by many different avenues. The artist could be a student, someone Donna has known, someone who has heard of the Gallery, or an Artist Donna has checked out through a previous art show.
The Art show coming up was recommended by Scott Rice, Artist teaching Art here at Kirtland. Rice recommended six women in his portfolio class. The Art show coming up is titled, "Women With Balls," opening Wednesday, October 18, with an artist reception from 6-8 p.m.
"It takes a practicing artist to teach art. The students see that we know what we're doing which makes them more confident in our ability to teach art." said Rice.
Donna and Rice hold their own show called the "Joe and Scott Show" in the Art Gallery. Look for up coming dates.
In the process of setting up for a show, after the selection process is made, the artist comes and walks through the gallery.
"They decide for themselves how many pieces will be needed." said Donna.
The Artist then chooses which style they would like to take for the show.
Jackie Little, from the Kirtland House, gets contacted at that time to set the date for the show. The date is usually set for a Wednesday due to the attendance of the students being strong on that day.
Little prepares the Kirtland house putting together the food and the theme of the show.
"I like to be a hostess for the Art Shows. This is an educational experience for me to." said Little, "We're fortunate to have Joe bringing in Art like he does to our community."
After Little is contacted and a date is set Donna gets a list of work with titles and description of each piece of Art. This list is taken to the print shop for the labels to be made.
"The print shop always rises to the occasion for making the necessary signage." said Donna.
Work studies help with this part, hanging the necessary signage, dusting, and straightening. Once the show is hung the labels are put on each piece of Art. Posters are then made up to be distributed throughout Kirtland with the Artist, time, and place of the reception. Then everyone waits patiently for reception day to come.
If you're at the college on Reception night come check out the Art Gallery and get some free food.
