Kirtland is striving to help their students become better writers.
Kirtland Community College has a revised writing center for their students. Three highly qualified writing specialists are available to help the students at Kirtland write.
The writing center has been moved to room 18 of the Instruction Building. The hours that the writing specialists will be available for service are Monday and Tuesday 9:00-12:00; Wednesday and Thursday 1:00-4:00. "These days are staggered to reach as many students as possible." said Kate Jacobson, head of the writing center.
"The goal of Kirtland writing assistance is not just to fix individual papers but to help students become better writers." said Jacobson.
Students may use this writing center for absolutely anything to do with writing. The writing specialists are there to help generate critical thinking from the writer.
"Formulate a question that promotes the student to find the answer." said Ruth Johnson, writing specialist.
This is more the goal of the revised writing center to help students write stronger content in their work. Whether the student is working on a huge research project, short story, or just working on a personal essay the writing center can help with that.
"Great step in helping students become more competent writers." said Heidi Sura, writing specialist. "Our hope is to help KCC students become writers."
Another of their hopes is to help students critically evaluate their own work.
Kathy Marsh, Instructional Dean, has put this project into motion. There is also a new online writing center called OWL. This online service is for students who are taking online courses or have scheduling conflicts.
Students are encouraged to stop in the newly revised Writing Center and become the best writers they can be.
