An author, who's also a physician and mother of an autistic child, will be the featured speaker at Kirtland Community College in February, as part of the college's ongoing Controlled Burn Reading Series.
Michigan resident Dr. Mary Sharp, author of "An Unexpected Joy, The Gift of Parenting a Challenging Child," will share her perspectives on her work and life during a reading on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Sharp, who lives in the East Lansing area with her husband, Rafael, and their son, Nic, practices primary care medicine for nephrology patients two days a week. The remainder of her time is filled with writing, autism advocacy, reading and mastering the discipline of staring off into space.
She's currently working on a collection of essays about Nic, who has autism, and his adventures in adolescence.
All of the Controlled Burn readings, which are free and open to the public, are held at the Kirtland House conference center on College Drive. At the Feb. 6 event, there will be a reception at 5 p.m., with the reading starting at 5:30 p.m.
For more information about the Controlled Burn series, call Carol Finke at 275-5000, extension 386. And, for more about Kirtland's creative writing programs, call extension 284 or visit online at www.kirtland.edu.
