The consultant hired to assist in the selection of Kirtland Community College's president began reviewing applications and conducting preliminary reference checks on all applicants, Monday, Feb. 19, according to Dale Schantz, director of Kirtland's human resources and the liason between consultant Dr. David Ponitz and the search committee.
Ponitz is expected to recommend 15 cindidates to the search committee by early March.
The job posting for a new President of Kirtland Community College was advertised in all area papers as well as national papers aimed at educators and administrators.
"We advertised in the Community College Weekly which goes to virtually Community College in the country and the notice of position opening to all Michigan colleges and Universities." Shantz said, "We also sent notices to most lower peninsula papers. We posted in the Detroit Free Press, Lansing State Journal, Grand Rapids Press, Bay City Times, Record Eagle, Alpena Times, and all the local papers. And of course the posting went on our website."
So far there are 25 candidates applying for the position. Out of the 25, there are 19 with a Ph.D. or Ed.D., one D.O., and three who have earned their Masters Degree. One of those 25 applicants is a college president, eight are vice presidents, six are deans, and two instructors.
"Mr. Ponitz thought we would receive 25 applicants, I thought about 30. We've reached 25 and are still receiving applications." Shantz said.
Applications have arrived from all over the United States. Eleven applicants are from Michigan and the other fourteen are from Arkansas, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York, Missouri, South Dakota, and Florida.
According to Shantz, by mid-March, Dr. Ponitz will submit a recommended list of 15 to the KCC Presidential Search Advisory Committee. The committee will then narrow the list to five with two alternates. Those candidates will be interviewed by Kirtland's Board of Trustees.
