KCC's Alpha Omicron Gamma Chapter once again brought home the top prize at the Michigan Region Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Convention in May for the most aluminum can tabs.

For the second year in a row, Kirtland was awarded top honors at the an-nual convention with 102 pounds of can tabs out of the total 191.5 pounds received. KCC's closest competitor was Kalamazoo Community College with 63.2 pounds.

Throughout the year, employees, students and community members drop off their tabs in the President's office.

Retiree Sherman Bresette makes a monthly contribution of large ziplock bags that he gets from his local conve-nience store. Kathleen Wray brings in bags of tabs she collects from patients at her chiropractor's office. And former KCC men's basketball coach, Glen Donahue, brought in boxes of small aluminum scraps that helped tip the scales.

Due to all those who supported the program, the chapter was able to significantly increase their can tabs contribution over last year's numbers.

Last year, KCC won first place with 79.14 pounds and the closest competition was 48 pounds.

More importantly, the efforts of all those who helped add to the Honor Society's service project are also helping benefit the Ronald McDonald House, a "home away from home" for families of children with serious illnesses who are undergoing treatment at nearby medical facilities.

The 2008 regional convention will be held at Oakland Community College, Royal Oak/Southfield on May 16-18th.

"So, keep saving those can tabs and turn them in any time during the academic year to the president's office," encouraged Kathy Koch, chapter contact advisor.
